Three Charged in Kangaroo Robbery

Three people are facing armed robbery charges in connection with a July 14 armed robbery of a Kangaroo convenience store located at 1805 Savannah Highway, according to a Charleston Police Department statement.

Clinton Elton Atkins, 32, of Detroit, Mich., Jerry Ernest Ballard, 29, of Midland Park Road, North Charleston, and Candice Lajoy Collins, 31, of Midland Park Road, North Charleston, are all charged with armed robbery.

Ballard was served with his arrest warrant at the Al Cannon Detention Center, where he was already being held on armed robbery charges from another jurisdiction, according to the statement.

The robbery occurred around 12:45 a.m. Saturday when two men dressed in black clothing entered the store, according to police.

At least one of the men was armed and brandished a silver revolver at the store clerk, while demanding he open the register, according to a Charleston Police Department incident report. The men then told the clerk to lay on the ground while one of them cleaned out the cash register and the other grabbed several packs of cigarettes, the report said.

Police allege that Collins drove the getaway car for Atkins and Ballard, according to the statement.

The Charleston Police Department received information from the North Charleston Police Department that led to the arrests, according to the statement.
