Update: Man Safely Ends Ravenel Bridge Standoff

Bridge was still closed near 6 p.m. in Thursday incident.

Charleston Police are dealing with a sucidal person on the Ravenel Bridge this afternoon and asking those traveling to Mount Pleasant to use an alternate route, according to a police statement.

Police and first responders surrounded a SUV that stopped on the middle of the bridge. A live broadcast on NBC News 2 showed the car trying to move around 4:15 p.m. after roughly an hour standing still. It hit the retaining wall before coming to a stop. 

Photos at The Post and Courier clearly show words written on the SUV, including "Game Over," "Stay Away" and "Happy Now."

U.S. Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer Robert Wilson said the service has three boats in the water at the foot of the bridge in case anyone jumps, but as of 4:50 p.m. the vessels were standing by while police deal with the situation on the bridge.

"All we know is there is a white SUV with a guy threatening to take his life," Wilson said.

A bystander who spoke with Patch.com said there are people inside the Lexus SUV that is parked perpendicular to the bridge railings.

UPDATE 5 p.m.: Police have now reopened one lane of southbound traffic on the bridge for those drivers leaving Mount Pleasant, according to a statment from the Charleston Police Department.

UPDATE 5:13 p.m.: Police have now apparently taken the driver of the SUV into custody, according to communications heard over a police scanner, and reports from various other media outlets.

UPDATE 5:40 p.m.: Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis told Live 5 News minutes ago that the man was "not a suspect." He's a man who threatened to harm himself, Francis said.
