Here are the top three stories today in Charleston:

  1. Charleston County will be opening two emergency shelters today as the area braces for Hurricane Ian. The county expects for the worst effects of the tropical storm to impact the area on Thursday and Friday. Hurricane Ian will bring flooding, abnormally high tides, dangerous storm surges, and high wind speeds. The first shelter will open at 8:00 a.m. at 3841 Leeds Avenue and will be pet-friendly. The second shelter will open at noon at Dunston Elementary School. (WCBD News 2)
  2. Joint Base Charleston has initiated Hurricane Condition 4. The condition is declared when a storm brings sustained winds of 58 miles per hour within 72 hours. Under Hurricane Condition 4, the base will begin precautionary preparations to secure property and plan for possible evacuation. (Count On 2)
  3. The Charleston County School Board has collected feedback on a new governance structure. On Friday, the board will be hosting a working session to draft out the new structure's goals and guardrails. The new structure has been classed Student Outcomes Focused Governance. (Live 5 News)
