Veronica's Case Appealed to Supreme Court

The adoptive parents of Veronica Capobianco, a Native American child returned to her biological father through a S.C. Supreme Court ruling, are appealing their case to the U.S. Supreme Court

James Island couple Matt and Melanie Capobianco have appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court the decision turning their adopted daughter over to her biological father.

News2 reports the couple filed the appeal Thursday.

The Capobiancos adopted Veronica from the girls mother shortly after her birth more than two years ago. The girl's father, an Oklahoma man, and member of the Cherokee Tribe, had waived his right to contest the adoption, but later changed his mind.

, and South Carolina courts agreed with him and ordered Veronica be returned to him. , though the case has caused an uproar locally and among many working with adoptive families. One of the authors of the Indian Child Welfare Act has even gone on record saying it was never intended to be used in this manner.
