West Ashley Student Charged With Arson

Student accused of lighting boxes on fire

CHARLESTON - Police on Wednesday charged 18-year-old Malcolm Gerrell Singleton, a student at , with arson, according to a Charleston Police Department statement.

Police say Singleton lit a couple of empty boxes inside of a classroom at the high school early Wednesday morning.

The school was evacuated briefly but by 9:30 a.m. students were back in class, according to Charleston County School District spokesman Jason Sakran. No significant damage was reported at the school, Sakran said.

Singleton has been recommended to the Office of Student Placement for disciplinary action, though no decision has been made as far as suspension or expulsion yet. Sakran said there may be extinuating circumstances involved.
