Delta Dental Awards $300,000 to Address Oral Health Disparities

Funding Includes a Total of $50,000 for Two Columbia-Area Organizations

More than 32% of South Carolina adults have not visited a dentist in the past year,1 and nearly 20% of children in kindergarten through third grade have untreated tooth decay.2 These issues are exacerbated by a significant shortage of dental health professionals in the state. To help combat this, Delta Dental of South Carolina – a leading dental benefits provider and a non-profit organization – has awarded oral health grant support to 11 organizations that align with its mission to improve oral health. The company awarded a total of $304,450 in grant funding to these organizations to help further oral health initiatives, educational programs and charitable causes that are working to meet the oral health needs of children and adults in South Carolina. This includes two organizations located in Columbia – Healthy Learners and WellPartners Dental Clinic – that each received $25,000 in funding.

"Healthy Learners has seen a tremendous increase in urgent dental needs of uninsured Hispanic students in several counties across the state," stated Amy Splittgerber, M.Ed., executive director of Healthy Learners. "Children can’t learn if they are suffering from dental pain. The funding from Delta Dental is crucial to being able to meet these urgent needs and to make sure students can thrive in the classroom.”

Healthy Learners will use the oral health grant funding to help conduct dental screenings, education and follow-up care for underserved Hispanic/Latinx residents in Lexington, Richland and Greenwood counties. WellPartners Dental Clinic will use the funds to purchase intra-oral cameras to further the impact of its free comprehensive dental care clinic for uninsured or underinsured children and adults from families with low incomes in Richland, Fairfield and Lexington counties.
