DEW: 1,100 Additional People Out of Work in Columbia Area

Columbia area unemployment rate above national average.

More than 1,000 people in the Columbia area fell into unemployment in August, according to S.C. Department of Employment Workforce. 

About 1,100 jobless are joining the nearly 28,000 actively seeking work. 

The Columbia area's unemployment rate is at 7.5 percent, above the national average of 7.3 percent. In addition to a .3 percent decrease in employment in August, the Columbia area also saw a .2 percent increase in unemployment in August as more people enter the workforce.

Since August 2012, the Columbia area has seen an increase of 5,700 jobs, equating to a 1.6 percent increase in employment. 

In August, the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 8.1 percent.
