Report: Columbia Council Votes to Increase Salary for Mayor Position

The salary increase for Columbia's first strong mayor would take effect July 1, 2014.

Columbia City Council voted 5-0 to set the salary for its strong mayor at $160,000, according to a report from The State.

The salary increase for Columbia's first strong mayor, should voters approve the change in the form of government, would take effect July 1, 2014, the report said. 

Three mayoral candidates will appear on the November ballot: incumbent Mayor Steve Benjamin, councilman Moe Baddourah and Larry Sypolt.

Benjamin's current salary is $17,500.
