Trains Derail In Columbia, 2 Injured: Fire Department

Two people were hospitalized Monday when trains derailed in Columbia, according to fire officials.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Two are hospitalized after a train derailed Monday morning near Longwood Drive and Shop Road, according to fire officials.

The incident happened around 8:20 a.m., according to the Columbia-Richland Fire Department. Two railway employees were given medical attention and taken to nearby hospitals. Spokesman Mike DeSumma said he had no further details on the rail workers who were injured. The railway is currently shut down while crews work to clear the scene.

The fire department is working with the South Carolina Public Health and Environmental Protection Agency, and rail authorities to get the rail line open again.

According to Fire Chief Aubrey D. Jenkins the incident happened in a mainly rural area near Longwood Drive with no residences nearby. A fuel spill occurred as a result of the derailment but it is contained.
