Here are the top three stories today in Hilton Head:

  1. The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) is seeking assistance in locating a 49-year-old man, Clifford Lamont Jenkins, who was reported missing by his family on Jul. 17. He is described as being five feet, eight inches tall, and weighing approximately 220 pounds. Jenkins was last seen driving a dark blue 2017 Chevrolet Cruze with South Carolina registration 232776W in the Big Road area of Grays Hill on Jul. 14. If you have any information regarding his whereabouts, please contact Beaufort County dispatch at 843-524-2777. (WSAV)
  2. With rising temperatures in South Carolina, the American Red Cross urges citizens to take precautions against extreme heat. They advise staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, seeking air-conditioned areas, and wearing lightweight, loose clothing. High-risk individuals, such as older adults, infants, and outdoor workers, should be checked on regularly for signs of heat-related illnesses, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, which require immediate medical attention. (Fox 28 Savannah)
  3. The 13-and-under and 14-and-under Beaufort County all-star baseball teams won the South Carolina state titles at Oscar Frazier Park in nearby Bluffton. The 14U squad, led by Coach Danny Morgan, dominated with a 6-0 record and advanced to the Dixie Boys World Series in Virginia. The 13U team, coached by Alex Hunt, went 3-1 and also secured a spot in the Dixie Junior Boys World Series in Alabama. Both teams have strong pitching and hitting, and they will begin their double-elimination World Series play on Saturday. (The Island News)

  • Hilton Head Island is implementing an adaptive traffic signal management (ATSM) system along major roads like William Hilton Parkway, Palmetto Bay Road, and Pope Avenue to improve traffic flow. The $3 million project, funded by Beaufort County, aims to reduce delays, improve travel times, decrease emissions and fuel consumption, and enhance safety for all road users. The ATSM system utilizes real-time data from cameras at intersections to dynamically adjust signal timing, providing a more efficient response to changing traffic conditions.
