Batesburg Man, Woman Die in Car Crash

Two people died and one person was injured Monday in a single-vehicle crash on U.S. 178 near Megellan Road, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The driver of the car, James Dean Burgess, 49, and a passenger, Wendy Susan Stechman, 44, both of Batesburg, died after Burgess's car crashed around 11:55 p.m, according to the Lexington County Coroner's Office.

Another passenger was transported to Lexington Medical Center with minor injuries, according to the coroner's office.

Burgess was driving his 2001 BMW on U.S. 178 when the car ran off the left side of the road, hit a tree and flipped several times, Lance Cpl. Brent Kelly with the highway patrol said.

No one in the car was wearing a seatbelt, Kelly said. 

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
