LCSD: Deadly Gaston Fire Caused by Space Heater
An 84-year-old woman was killed in the Tuesday morning fire.

Tuesday's deadly house fire in Gaston was caused by a space heater, the Lexington County Sheriff's Department announced Thursday.
The fire killed Helen Eaglin, 84.
An investigation by the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and Lexington County Fire Service determined that the fire was caused by a space heater that had been placed too close to combustible materials. Â

Eaglin’s son, who owns the home at 2124 Oak Top Drive, was injured when he tried to rescue his mother. He was transported by Lexington County EMS to Lexington Medical Center and from there he was sent to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctor’s Hospital in Augusta, Ga.Â
All other occupants of the home, which did not appear to have any smoke detectors, escaped without injury.

The Lexington County Fire Service and the National Fire Protection Association want to remind everyone to keep all fixed and portable space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including newspapers, furniture and even walls.
Citizens also are reminded to maintain at least one working smoke detector at each level of their homes and in all sleeping areas.
