Sheriff: Man Who Ran Over, Killed Girlfriend Charged with Felony DUI

The incident happened around 3 p.m. Thursday near Leesville.

A 45-year-old Lexington man is charged with felony driving under the influence after deputies say he ran over his girlfriend Thursday and killed her.

Lexington County deputies say Charlie Austin Roof  was drunk when he ran over his girlfriend, 49-year-old Mary Jane Tucker, just before 3 p.m. Thursday in the 200 block of Decie Road near Leesville.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Tucker's body lying in the road and Roof standing over her, according to the sheriff's department. Roof told deputies that he and Tucker had been drinking and were arguing at the time of the incident.

Roof was driving Tucker's Dodge Durango, and Tucker was riding in the passenger seat, according to the sheriff's department. Witnesses told deputies Roof drove away from a house on Decie Road where Tucker had been visiting relatives so fast that the tires on the SUV spun in the dirt.

Deputies are still investigating how Tucker ended up outside the vehicle before Roof ran over her, according to the sheriff's department. Tucker was pronounced dead at the scene.

Roof was being held Friday at the Lexington County Detention Center on a $200,000 bond.
