Police: Man Stole Woman's Purse in Walmart Parking Lot

The man led police on a brief manhunt after fled from the scene and crashed the stolen car he was driving.

Lexington Police arrested a man Tuesday who they say stole a woman's purse, fled the scene and then crashed the stolen car he was driving into a curb on Sunset Boulevard. 

Abiyjah Anthony Smith III, 23,  was arrested Tuesday and charged with strong-armed robbery and possession of a stolen vehicle. 

Police say Smith approached a woman around 9:05 p.m. Tuesday in the Walmart parking lot on Sunset Boulevard, pushed her against her vehicle and stole her purse. 

He then got into a four-door sedan and headed east on Sunset Boulevard, according to police. Two witnesses followed Smith as he fled. 

Smith then crashed the car into a curb, got out and fled on foot, according to police. Officers with the Lexington Police Department found Smith and arrested him. 

The car he was driving had been reported stolen recently by Gaston Police. 

Smith is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center on a $110,000 cash surety bond.
