Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Looking for something fun to do this weekend? The Myrtle Beach Bowl is hosting a fundraising event for the Grand Strand Humane Society Saturday, May 20 at 1 p.m., located at 101 Gray Drive. It's the "adopt, don't shop" fundraiser. Check-in begins at 12:30 p.m. and bowling begins at 1 p.m. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event will go directly to four featured rescues and there will be animals on site with the humane society ready to be adopted. Don't miss this event! - Next fall, Atlantic Collegiate Academy, a new charter high school, is opening in Horry County. The school will operate out of Beach Church in Myrtle Beach for the 2023-24 school year; however, the permanent campus will be on Bear Bluff Road in Conway. According to wpde.com, "ACA students will be on a split schedule, with half of their day devoted to traditional academic classes, and the other half available to work, volunteer, or focus on sports. ACA principal Mike Lorenz said they believe athletics allow kids to learn key traits outside the classroom." (wpde.com)
- In an effort to protect the children and students in Myrtle Beach schools the Myrtle Beach police have been given the go-ahead to install acoustic threat detection sensors as part of the School Violence Prevention program. The devices are set to be installed in the Myrtle Beach elementary, middle, and high schools. The police department received a grant of $198,000, which the city matched at 25 percent for the project. According to WMBF, "The acoustic threat detection sensors are connected to a database, which can pick up gunfire in the immediate or adjacent area. It can then send an alert to law enforcement, with a location for officers to respond." (WMBF)
- On Wednesday night in Garden City just after 11 p.m., 88-year-old Claiborne Waller died of injuries sustained when he was struck by a 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle while he was trying to cross the road near Woodland Drive Extension. The two people on the motorcycle were reportedly taken to the hospital. The collision is being investigated. (Myhorrynews)
