Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- A " violent act of animal cruelty” happened recently at the Ocean Lakes Campground. Swannie, a swan who was the unofficial mascot of the campground, was reportedly harassed and then intentionally hit by a golf cart. She was initially in critical condition. She is now being cared for at the Carolina Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, which is raising funds for Swannie’s medical care. To donate visit their website. The individual who allegedly was driving the golf cart has been banned from the campgrounds and the incident is being investigated by Horry County Animal Control. (WMBF)
- Loren Jean McCutcheon, 57, of Horry County was arrested and faces animal cruelty charges following an investigation that revealed that 57 animals, including a camel, were on the property on Highway 76 in the Nichols area and were living in unsanitary conditions and underweight. According to WBTW, "McCutcheon has faced animal cruelty charges in other states. She was jailed in Pennsylvania in 2019 and in Florida in 2021. The animals have been seized and taken into police custody." (WBTW)
- There will be a prescription drug take-back event this weekend on Saturday, June 24, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Carolina Forest Library. If you have any old or unwanted prescription medications, bring them to this Shoreline Behavioral Health Services Take Back Event so that they don’t end up in the wrong hands. (WBTW)
- Don't forget, the annual Riverfest in downtown Conway will be taking place on June 24. Join the community for a weekend of family-fun, live music, delicious food, arts and crafts, a beer garden and unforgettable memories along the Waccamaw River. According to WMBF, "Live entertainment will be held in Riverfront Park including performances from local entertainers and a fireworks show at 9:30. Hang out along Marina Drive for the opening ceremony will be held on Marina Drive followed by a golf cart parade at 11:30 a.m., artisan market, business expo and a Jello Jump with a kids area."
