- Finding a solution! New fiberglass docks will help offset storm damage and be better for the environment. Part of the reason fiberglass docks are a solution to storm problems is because, reportedly, they are 76 percent heavier than water, so when storm surges rise against the dock, they will remain grounded. According to WBTW, "Bryan Pratt of A Fiberglass Solution based in Murrells Inlet said the problem with wooden docks lies in the material. Not only does the wood float and rot, it’s also bad for the environment. Treated lumber is hazardous and keeping it out of the water will protect marine life. Pratt said the fiberglass docks are a great solution. 'There’s currently no timeline for when the new fiberglass docks will be put to use at beach-access points on the Grand Strand, but they are already in use at many beaches in North Carolina,' Pratt said." (WBTW)
- Did you know a law enacted in 1994 affects whether or not locals can book a staycation at area hotels? Neither did Grand Stand resident Max Neubauer. He reportedly found out about this law when he recently tried to book a stay at the North Beach Resort and Villas and he couldn't do it. According to WMBF, "The Lodging Establishment Act allows hotels to turn away locals or anyone else as long as they do not discriminate against someone’s race, gender, marital status or age. MGA Travel President Michael Graham said issues like big parties and illegal activities prompted the rule, and many hotels choose to follow it over safety concerns." Now you know! (WMBF)
- Strand Hospitality will be managing Horry County's newest hotel: Fairfield Inn & Suites. The new establishment boasts 98 rooms and is located just across the street from Coastal Carolina University and Horry-Georgetown Technical College at 2061 E. Highway 501. (Charleston Post Courier)
