Here are the top four stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- In an effort to enhance sports tourism in North Myrtle Beach, the city plans to spend $25 million on a sports complex expansion. Six additional baseball and softball fields will be added along with five more multipurpose fields for soccer, lacrosse and ultimate frisbee. In addition, a family entertainment center will be constructed in the middle. (WBTW)
- Congratulations to Renee Atkinson an AP English teacher from Aynor High School, who has been named South Carolina Teacher of the Year. State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver made the announcement at the governor's mansion. According to WACH.com, "Atkinson was loaned a brand-new BMW where she will travel across the state to visit other schools as the Ambassador of Education." (WACH.com)
- If you've been wanting to add a fuzzy ball of love and affection to your family, you should check out these Myrtle Beach area shelters for a pet who needs a home. For those looking to adopt, a great place to begin the search for your new friend is at Forgotten Whiskers, where Simba the cat is waiting patiently, or another local rescue facility. If you aren't sure if you have time to take care of a pet year round, many shelters also offer opportunities to foster pets until they are placed in permanent homes. With help from our friends at Petfinder, Patch has compiled this week’s list of animals available for adoption near you. Whether you’re looking for cuddles or companionship, one of these animals could be the perfect fit for your family. Click on any listing to learn more about a pet or to start the adoption process.See Latest Pets Up For Adoption In Myrtle Beach Area (Myrtle Beach Patch)

From my notebook:
- South Carolina Aquarium: "Do you know, or are you, an inquisitive, STEM-loving teen who is forever curious about the natural world around us? Well, you’re in luck! On May 13 from 11 a.m.–3 p.m., teens can join Aquarium educators in searching the ocean sand and water for aquatic creatures at our next Teen Science Café! ." (South Carolina Aquarium via Instagram)
- The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: "Daisy, the most adorable 10 month old kitten, is still looking for her forever home! Every day she moves her bed to the front of her cage hoping her cute little face will stop someone in their tracks. To meet this cutie, please call 843-249-4948 to schedule an appointment, or you can submit an application at https://humanesocietynmb.org/sponsor-a-pet/" (The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach via Facebook)
- Myrtle Beach Police Department: "Earlier this month we shared the swearing in of our new officer Trey Caison. We recently got news of his actions while heading to the SCCJA on March 5. Officer Caison along with two other recruits were about 100 yards from the academy in Columbia, SC when the vehicle in front of them was struck by a large pick-up truck. Without hesitation, Officer Caison and the other recruits quickly jumped into action with traffic vests in hand. One recruit called 911, another began to direct traffic, and Caison tended to the occupant of the vehicle that got hit. Caison quickly applied a life-saving tourniquet to the occupant's arm that was severely wounded." (Myrtle Beach Police Department via Facebook)
