Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. A proactive traffic patrol by North Myrtle Beach police Officer Wallace led to an arrest of a shooting suspect and kidnapper. When Officer Wallace saw a white Jeep go through a red light she pulled it over. The female driver of the vehicle reportedly mouthed, "Help Me," to Wallace, who was able to get the passenger out of the car, cuffed and into the back of her cruiser. The passenger, who has been identified as Collins Bates, who allegedly had shot someone and then forced the driver of the Jeep to drive him away, was arrested. (WMBF)
  2. A multi-person fight broke out just before 2 a.m. Wednesday in the parking lot near the restaurant and Comfort Suites in the area of Highway 17 - Hwy 501 interchange. The fight ended with gunshots Four people were taken into custody. According to WMBF, Myrtle Beach police said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing. (WMBF)
  3. A Smart Cities Council has been created in the City of Myrtle Beach. It consists of 13 staff members from various departments. One of the things the council is hoping to develop is a “Myrtle Beach 101″ app to help answer questions. According to WMBF, "The goal of a smart city is to use advanced technology to help improve the quality of life and businesses. That could include smart trash cans."(WMBF)
  4. An area air quality alert was issued Wednesday, as smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to waft into the area. Fine smoke, haze and dust approached or exceeded unhealthy standards. The smoke was said to irritate the eyes and respiratory system, as well as aggravate or exacerbate chronic heart and lung diseases. Be careful out there today. (WMBF)
