Three years ago, the Veterans of Foreign Wars started an initiative designed to get VFW Districts and Posts more involved with their local veterans and the civilian community. The program is called the VFW National Day of Service and kicked off May 4, 2024, with events occurring throughout the month of May.

River Park Senior Living, in Little River, South Carolina, previously did not have a flagpole for its main housing complex. North Myrtle Beach Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10804, working with the River Park management staff, recently purchased and installed a flagpole in front of the River Park main building to honor area veterans. On May 4, River Park and Post 10804 dedicated the flagpole and raised the American Flag for the first time.

There were 107 people in attendance including 14 resident veterans. Of note is a new member of River Park and VFW Post 10804, 107-year-old Gus Preno. Preno served on various Navy ships as a radio operator in the North Atlantic from 1940 to 1945. Gus has the distinction of being the oldest living World War II veteran in South Carolina. Also in attendance were VFW Auxiliary Past National Presidents Jan Owens and Cortina Barnes.
