GARDEN CITY, SC — A woman was killed Wednesday in Garden City when an umbrella was picked up by the wind and impaled her while she sat on a beach, a Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard confirmed to Patch.

Tammy Perreault, a 63-year-old from Surfside Beach, was struck by the umbrella around 12:40 p.m. She was taken to Waccamaw Community Hospital, where she died around 1:30 p.m., according to Willard.

Several off-duty medical professionals and other bystanders provided first aid to the woman before she was taken to the hospital, a Horry County spokesperson said.

Scotty's Beach Bar, a restaurant in Surfside Beach, mourned Perreault's death in a Facebook post Thursday describing her as kind-hearted and sweet.

"To be as sweet as her day in and day out should be a goal for all," the post said. "If everyone can please keep the Perreault family in your hearts today, especially her husband Mike. Mike we love you and are immensely sorry for your loss."
