National Guard Unit Deploying to Afghanistan

Deployment event begins 11 a.m. Saturday at the Summerville National Guard Armory.

A Summerville-based S.C. National Guard unit will deploy to Afghanistan beginning Saturday, ABC News 4 reported.

Deployment preparations kickoff 11 a.m. Saturday at the Summerville National Guard Armory, located at 2735 West 5th North St.

The Summerville unit is the 1223rd Engineer Company. The unit has more than 150 members and will conduct deconstruction missions.

In a release sent to multiple media outlets, Adjutant General of South Carolina Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston Jr. said:

"These heroic South Carolinians will deploy to Afghanistan at a pivotal time and they will have a critical mission. I am grateful for their families' sacrifices."
