Sheriff's Office: Avoid Edisto River Flood Waters This Weekend

The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office is asking that persons avoid the Edisto River this weekend due to the river being above flood stage and being a hazard to swimmers and boaters.  If people feel that they must get on the river, they are encouraged to use extreme caution and understand that currents and undertows make activities extremely dangerous and deadly.

The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and other local agencies have already had to perform rescue operations for both swimmers and boaters and, thus far, avoided any loss of life.  The young, impaired and those who are weak swimmers are especially at risk and, subjecting someone to a known hazard may result in criminal charges should and injury or death occur.

Should someone become stranded or need a rescue, water levels may make this a difficult or impossible task so, the recommended course of action is to wait until the water recedes and conditions become more favorable to enjoy recreational activities on the river.
