Ryan won the Bill Masterson Trophy for perseverance and sportsmanship in 2020. He won the award after he entered the NHL's player assistance program in 2019 to help treat his alcohol abuse and returned to the Senators later that season.

Ryan responded to well-wishers regarding his relapse on Twitter on Wednesday.

"I've had so many incredible messages today," Ryan said. "Thank you for all of them. Today is day 1 (again). Mostly embarrassed, but I shouldn’t be. Today, I'm waking up and choosing better."

Ryan, a former second overall draft pick, was named to the 2015 NHL All-Star Team and the All-Rookie Team in 2009. He finished second that year in voting for the Calder Trophy, given to the NHL's rookie of the year.

The wing helped Team USA to a silver medal in men's hockey at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
