📰 News we're reading

1. A safety net in South Nashville could disappear as donations decline (newschannel5.com) — A South Nashville Free Store that supplies food, diapers, hygiene items, and toys to 50–70 shoppers weekly may shut down by year’s end without at least $25,000 in new funding. Empowering Neighborhood Partnerships says rising need and shrinking donations are squeezing this Lafayette Street safety net that serves families across South Nashville and nearby high-need neighborhoods.

2. Unmarked vehicles, work van stops: ICE arrests in Middle Tennessee (newschannel5.com) — Immigration advocates report a spike in ICE arrests across Nashville and surrounding Middle Tennessee, including stops in South Nashville and near local schools. They’re urging residents to know their rights while also organizing a “House of Hope” toy drive to support children whose parents have been detained or are afraid to go out and shop.

3. Late fees lawsuit: TN woman files class-action suit against Park Happy (newschannel5.com) — A new class-action lawsuit claims parking operator Park Happy is charging excessive, poorly disclosed late fees at its Nashville lots, despite state rules on notice. Filed in Davidson County Chancery Court, the case could affect many local drivers who use these lots and are confused by surprise penalties after parking.

4. Nashville Boy Scout troop loses $10,000 in equipment after trailer theft (wsmv.com) — A South Nashville Boy Scout troop just lost about $10,000 in camping gear after thieves stole their longtime equipment trailer from a church parking lot. With no security cameras and few leads, Metro police say recovery may be difficult, so the scouts are fundraising for replacements and rethinking security. The loss could force them to scale back next year’s camping trips and major adventures.

5. Vanderbilt leads Nashville in federal funding with $7.5 billion received in past decade (fox17.com) — Vanderbilt University and Medical Center remain Nashville’s largest employer and top recipient of federal funds, pulling in more than $7.5 billion in grants and contracts over the past decade. Much of that money flows through health and research agencies, and Vanderbilt is weighing a Trump-era offer of preferred federal access tied to hiring and tuition conditions.
