Arlington - Earlier this week, Arlington Independent School District's (ISD) Board of Trustees made the decisive vote to appoint Dr. Steven Wurtz as Interim Superintendent.

The move comes as the district continues its search for a permanent replacement for the highly respected Dr. Marcelo Cavazos, who plans to retire this coming August.

Melody Fowler, president of the Arlington ISD board, was optimistic about the decision.

“We are pleased that Dr. Wurtz will serve in this role and we’re confident he’ll provide steady leadership during this transitional period,” said Melody Fowler, board president, Arlington ISD. “He has a firm understanding of the district’s strategic priorities, and we know he is committed to delivering superior educational opportunities to our students.”

Dr. Wurtz's career spans twenty years in educational leadership, starting as a bilingual educator in Irving ISD. His skills and proficiency quickly propelled him to the role of assistant principal. Further along his career path, Dr. Wurtz served as a principal in Grand Prairie ISD and subsequently in Irving ISD, where he rose to become division director of elementary schools.

Ten years ago, Dr. Wurtz joined Arlington ISD as an area superintendent of elementary schools, before being promoted to the position of chief academic officer just a year later

“I’m honored to fill this role,” said Wurtz on accepting has new role. “My main focus will be maintaining a high-quality learning experience, ensuring smooth operations and fostering a positive environment for students and staff.”

Dr. Wurtz assumed the interim superintendent role on Wednesday, June 14. The handover process will be supervised by Dr. Cavazos, who will act as an advisor until his retirement at the end of August 2023.
