Cedar Park City Council Election Results

Mayor clinches 2nd term; incumbent wins big; ex-council member ousts controversial incumbent; and an investment advisor yields dividends.

Elections totals are total but unofficial tallies from the office of the Travis County clerk.CEDAR PARK, TX — The mayor of Cedar Park earned a second term in besting his opponent on Tuesday night, a controversial incumbent was trounced by a former council member who returned to oust him, an incumbent won by a huge margin and an investment advisor earned big dividends in clinching a wide-open seat.

All told, voters had a half-dozen candidates — among them a pair of incumbents — from which to choose. Polls opened in Texas at 7 a.m. and closed at 7 p.m.

Park Mayor Corbin Van Arsdale, 50, secured a second term after defeating Jim Richardson, 61, a political newcomer. Van Arsdale is a former state legislator and attorney while Richardson is a product manager in electrical engineering.

Corbin Van Arsdale: 13,896 (57.95 percent)

Jim Richardson: 10,085 (42.05 percent)

Place 2

Mel Kirkland: 12,864 (61.69 percent)

Bob Cornelius 7,987 (38.31 percent)

Incumbent Mel Kirkland, owner of a landscape consulting company, is hoping to stave off challenger Bob Cornelius, an executive director of a marketing and advertising company. Kirkland is seeking his second term on the dais.


Place 4

Results will be posted as they come in:

Eric Boyce: 12,371 (61.61 percent)

Jim Penniman-Morin: 7,710 (38.39 percent)

Eric Boyce, a director of an investment firm, is running for Place 4 against attorney Jim Penniman-Morin. The seat is up for grabs after incumbent Mike Guevara opted to run for the District 136 seat of the Texas House.

Place 6

Dorian Chavez: 8,956 (40.19 percent)

Heather Jefts: 13,329 (59.81 percent)

Incumbent Dorian Chavez seeks to retain his seat after one term in facing a challenge from Heather Jefts, who formerly served on the city council from 2017 to 2019. Chavez listed his occupation as a sales manager for a maker of cleaning products, while Jefts owns a swimming business.

A conservative firebrand, Chavez previously made national headlines after showing up at a drag queen story hour at a library in a neighboring town, and later earned the ire of residents for showing up at a political rally at the Capitol building in Austin with his fellow conservative on the council dais, Tim Kelly, sans protective face covering amid the coronavirus pandemic in rebuke of health officials' guidelines.
