Is Accused Dallas Kidnapper Darriynn Brown A Repeat Offender?

DALLAS, TX —Darriynn Brown, already charged with kidnapping in the fatal May 15 disappearance of 4-year old Cash Gernon, is now facing additional charges of attempted kidnapping of a sleeping child.

News reports are calling it a "shocking twist." But ever since Antwainese Square discovered the lifeless and bloody body of Gernon in the middle of a South Dallas suburban street, the case — and its participants — have provided nothing but one gobsmacking development after another.

The latest news is that, according to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by KTVT, 18-year old Brown attempted in February to kidnap a sleeping 2-year old girl, and was fended off by her knife-wielding grandfather.

Now the teen is facing a second burglary charge, along with a charge of injury to a child, elderly individual or disabled individual.

Reports say that in February, Brown first forced his way into the grandfather's home and was sorting through his possessions when the man chased the teenager away — only to have him return.

Brown then kicked in the man's garage door, slugged the older man in the head and then grabbed his sleeping granddaughter, authorities said. The girl began to wail and her grandfather was able to pull her free before Brown disappeared again.

Weeks later, the two men met again at a Walmart, where Brown allegedly apologized for trying to take the man's granddaughter. Initially (and inexplicably), the man decided not to press charges.

If the allegations are true, they fit with what a neighbor feared when his own surveillance video showed a figure resembling Brown peering into his own backyard two months before Cash was taken.

Jose Alvarado believes his surveillance camera also caught Darriynn Brown appearing to investigate his backyard.

"It's really scary," Alvarado told The Daily Beast. "I have two kids, one girl and one boy, and they play basketball in the backyard." Alvarado's backyard shares an alley with Monica Sherrod's house — which is where the Gernon twins were living at the time.

So much for Nancy Grace's televised crazypants conjecture earlier this week on FOX TV that Brown was focused solely on Cash Gernon. Grace may be loud and famous, but she's no Nancy Drew. First, she misunderstood Alvarado's comments (he was talking about his backyard, not Sherrod's) and then asserted that Darriynn Brown "was gonna get this boy, one way or the other."

Somebody needs to hit the game show buzzer that says: WRONG.

The actual events in this case are confusing enough without a media motormouth making matters worse by tossing out incorrect information and acting as a character witness for people she's never met — i.e. Cash's father, Trevor Gernon.

As the most absolutely convinced are often reminded: It's not what you don't know that screws you up. It's what you're sure of — that isn't so.
