📰 News we're reading

1. Residents push for H-E-B store in Southern Dallas amid plans for new store in North Dallas (wfaa.com) — Residents and a Dallas council member are pressuring H-E-B to finally open a long-discussed store in Southern Dallas, particularly in Oak Cliff’s Bottom District, which remains a food desert. Their campaign follows quick movement on a new H-E-B in North Dallas, raising questions about investment and grocery access in historically underserved neighborhoods.

2. Northeast Dallas businesses targeted in early morning smash-and-grab spree (fox4news.com) — Several small businesses in northeast Dallas were hit by early-morning smash-and-grab burglaries, with a rock-wielding suspect caught on camera shattering glass doors and stealing cash and tips. Dallas police are investigating linked break-ins at Mario Bros Tacos, Primos Brothers Pizza, and nearby shops, leaving local owners paying out of pocket for repairs and losses.

3. Dallas ISD eyeing $6.2 billion bond for renovations, 26 new replacement campuses (dallasfreepress.com) — Dallas ISD is considering a massive $6.2 billion bond package that would fund 26 new replacement campuses, major renovations, and safety and technology upgrades across the district, along with a one-cent property tax increase. For the average $500,000 Dallas home, that’s about $33 more per year, and residents will get a chance to weigh in at a public hearing in January before any bond election is finalized.

4. Dallas Contemporary executive director Lucia Simek steps down (dallasnews.com) — Dallas Contemporary is undergoing a leadership change as executive director Lucia Simek steps down after 18 months, with board members stepping in while a new leader is sought. Under Simek, the museum boosted experimental programming, expanded the Dallas Art Book Fair, and launched a North Texas graduate mentorship program that will continue into 2026.

5. New Dallas DEA vows to escalate fight against fentanyl across North Texas, amid growing national crisis (wfaa.com) — Federal drug agents say Dallas remains a key hub for fentanyl trafficking into North Texas, and the new head of the DEA’s Dallas Division is promising tougher enforcement. Special Agent in Charge Joseph Tucker plans to ramp up operations across DFW, North Texas, and Oklahoma while warning residents that fentanyl is increasingly hidden in many different street drugs.
