Here are the top three stories today in Dallas:

  1. Murder charges have been filed against two Dallas teens in connection with a shooting on Feb. 5. A 14-year-old and 15-year-old are being accused of the murder of Quincy Lee Branch, 22. According to police, Branch and a 19-year-old man from Fort Worth were both shot while they were in a car, crashing into a Garland apartment building. The 14-year-old was already in custody on an unrelated case when the murder charge was filed, whereas the 15-year-old was arrested and charged with murder. Both juveniles are being held in the Henry Wade Juvenile Justice Center. (Subscription: Fort Worth Star-Telegram)
  2. The Dallas Park and Recreation Department is set to plant 800 to 1,000 young trees in city-owned parks by mid-April. This initiative forms part of "Branch Out Dallas," a program started in 2018 to reduce the heat island effect and increase the overall tree canopy in Dallas. Park sites are selected based on several criteria, including canopy coverage, open-space availability, and equity. While city staff is in charge of digging the holes for the trees and installing irrigation systems, the tree-planting events are volunteer-driven. Those interested can learn more about the project at the link. (Community Impact Newspaper)
  3. The City of Dallas is introducing affordable housing in Dallas through Oakhouse, a new mixed-income apartment community. The new community, created in conjunction with Mintwood Real Estate and MSquared, will bring "219 units of Class A affordable and market-rate housing" to the Oak Cliff neighborhood. It will offer 110 of its units at rent prices affordable to households that make up to 80 percent of the area's median income. (The Dallas Post Tribune)
