Texas Resident, A U.S. Citizen, Released From ICE Custody

According to multiple reports, the 18-year-old was taken into custody by federal immigration agents who suspected his documents were fake.

A Texas resident born in Dallas who is an American citizen was released on Tuesday after being taken into custody by federal immigration officials who suspected the 18-year-old's documents were fraudulent, multiple news reports say.

The teen, Francisco Erwin Galicia, was stopped at a Border Patrol checkpoint in South Texas on June 27 and was in custody for nearly a month, his attorney, Claudia Galan, told The Washington Post. According to his attorney, while Galicia provided agents with a Texas birth certificate, a Social Security card and a Texas ID, authorities were suspicious because others traveling with him did not have proper documentation.

According to the Post's reporting, Galicia's brother did not have legal status and he has since voluntarily left the country.

News of Galicia's detention was first reported by The Dallas Morning News.

Further complicating Galicia's case was the fact that his mother had taken out a tourist visa for him while he was a minor, according to the Post. The visa was discovered by agents after they fingerprinted him.

The Post reported that Galicia's mother, who is undocumented, had got a visa for the boy because she was unable to get him a U.S. passport when he was born.

Galicia reportedly explained this to agents and provided further documentation but still remained in custody.
