Boy, 6, Killed By Stray Bullet In Deputy-Involved Shooting

Kameron Prescott, 6, was inside his home when he was reportedly struck in the abdomen by a stray bullet.

SCHERTZ, TX β€” A 6-year-old boy was killed by a stray bullet in a shooting Thursday that involved deputies from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, multiple reports say. The medical examiner's office identified the boy killed inside his home as Kameron Prescott.

The San Antonio Express News reported that Prescott was struck in the abdomen while he was inside his home in Schertz, a small town located about 20 miles northeast of San Antonio. Deputies were reportedly chasing a woman and they opened fire on her as she tried to break into Prescott's home, according to the Express News.

The woman was also killed. According to the report in the Express News, the woman had pointed a weapon at police during the chase but no weapon was found on her. Two others inside the home were uninjured.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said four deputies fired at the woman who had several outstanding warrants, NBC News reported. She was reportedly on the home's front porch when deputies opened fire.

β€œSomething in the way that suspect presented to the deputies placed these deputies in direct fear for their lives,” Salazar said on Thursday.

The incident began around 11 a.m. Thursday when a deputy responding to a report of a stolen car found the woman hiding in a closet. She allegedly told the deputy that she had a weapon and would shoot. A chase ensued and Salazar said deputies believed the woman was armed because she appeared to point a weapon at them during the chase.

Salazar said that deputies all reported in their statements that the woman was holding an object in her hand, the Express News reported.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help pay for the boy's funeral expenses. Salazar said at a news conference Friday that he knows the boy's grandfather and conveyed messages to the family through him, NBC reported.

The sheriff's office said the deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on temporary administrative leave. They were identified as John Aguillon, a 27 year veteran of the department, George Herrera, who has been with the department with a little over 16 years, Jesse Arias, who has seven years of service and Johnny Longoria, who has been with the department for two years.

Authorities identified the suspect as 30-year-old Amanda Lenee Jones.
