Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:
- South San Antonio ISD reported a $12 million deficit and will address solutions to bring things back to normal. Here are a few ideas the district came up with: Seeking more money from Texas Legislature; keeping schools open despite talks of closing aging buildings down; coming up with some kind of system to bring students back to the district; filing for a "financial exigency"; and reducing employee salaries by 15 percent. More details at KSAT San Antonio.
- Jade Guevara was sentenced to life in prison after the double murder of Charles Krone, 37, and Roger Campos, 22. Guevara and his friend Carlos Hernandez went to Krone's home and shot the two men, while also pointing the gun at Krone's wife before leaving the scene. Hernandez is awaiting his sentencing after taking a plea deal. Guevara was automatically sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole because this was a capital murder case. The pair are also facing a separate capital murder charge from a different murder and robbery. KSAT San Antonio has more on this story.
- The Northside ISD Board of Trustees voted in John Craft to become its new superintendent on Monday. He's the former superintendent of Killeen ISD. Thirty-four people applied for the position and Board President Karen Freeman noted several positives about Craft's longterm commitment to education and drive to bring opportunities to children, among the reasons he was chosen. Craft said he hopes to learn as much as he can from retiring Superintendent Brian Woods before the school year is over. Texas Public Radio has the full scoop on this story.
- San Antonio is under a severe weather warning today! "Heavy winds, tornadoes, hail forecasted" for the Hill Country, I-35 corridor, and Costal Plains. High wind warnings of 40 to 60 miles per hour may develop this afternoon. Officials are advising to have plans of action to take such as: Safe place to shelter and ride out the storm, avoid starting fires, and bring in or secure loose items.
