📰 News we're reading

1. Northside ISD officials discuss opening all-virtual high school by next school year (ksat.com) — Northside ISD is exploring a new all-virtual high school that could launch as soon as the 2026–27 school year, giving San Antonio families another flexible learning option. District leaders are still deciding grade levels, eligibility, costs, and oversight, but say the model could help homeschoolers, charter students, and those facing issues like bullying return to NISD.

2. Bexar County invests $2.4M in new flood warning system with river authority partnership (news4sanantonio.com) — Bexar County is investing $2.4 million in a next-generation flood warning system developed with the San Antonio River Authority to improve how quickly residents and first responders get flood alerts. Officials say the technology, already in limited use since August, should provide faster, more accurate warnings as part of a broader push to prevent flood-related deaths in San Antonio and surrounding areas.

3. San Antonio Police Department reports overall crime decrease in 2025 (ksat.com) — San Antonio police say overall crime is down more than 13% this year, with big drops in property and person crimes and faster emergency response times. Crimes against society rose, which SAPD leaders attribute to stepped-up enforcement and more arrests, not more offending, as they briefed City Council’s Public Safety Committee.

4. Scare on Delta flight spurs emergency response from San Antonio first responders (expressnews.com) — San Antonio fire and EMS crews rushed to the airport Tuesday morning after a Delta flight reported possible fumes in the cabin, but everyone ultimately walked away without serious injury. Five people were evaluated on the ground, no one needed hospital care, and the aircraft landed safely while most emergency units were quickly released.

5. San Antonio Jewish community lights menorah in show of resilience after deadly attack abroad (kens5.com) — San Antonio’s Jewish community gathered at the Pearl for a public menorah lighting, emphasizing unity and resilience after a deadly Hanukkah attack in Australia. Local rabbis and families described feeling shaken but determined to “add light” through faith, community support, and a visible celebration backed by heightened law enforcement presence.
