The man was dining with his family at a Popeyes restaurant in San Antonio when police say a man attempted to rob him.

SAN ANTONIO, TX β A man who was eating dinner with his family at a Popeyes restaurant in Texas shot and killed a man who police say confronted him with a gun and attempted to rob him, authorities said.
Police say officers were dispatched to the restaurant for a robbery in progress Wednesday night and when they arrived on scene, they were told that a patron had shot the robbery suspect. When officers entered the restaurant, they found the suspect was dead on the floor and the patron told police he had shot him, according to police.
A police investigation revealed that the suspect entered the store and confronted the man with a gun, demanding his property, police said. The man who was eating dinner with his family told the suspect he had no money and spent it all on dinner.

Police say the man then asked the suspect to let his family leave because they didn't have anything he wanted. The suspect then turned towards the restaurant counter and yelled at the shift manager to stop running and pointed a handgun at him, police said.
The man who was eating dinner made sure his family got out of the restaurant safely before shooting the suspect multiple times and killing him, police said.

Police said the suspect confronted the man first and then the shift manager with deadly force, "placing them in fear of serious bodily injury or death." Police say the man responded to the threat "in defense of a third person" and engaged the suspect "with equal deadly force."
San Antonio Police Department Captain Michael Starnes told The San Antonio Express News the man is a licensed carrier and is not facing any charges.
"He really saved the day and protected a lot of people today," Starnes told the paper.
Police identified the man who was killed as between 18 to 25-years-old.
