Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:
- The San Antonio City Council is working to protect construction workers by making water and rest breaks mandatory, regardless of weather conditions. There has been an increase of calls to local firefighter stations with heat stress related emergencies. June's heat wave has contributed to 13 people's deaths across the state of Texas. A new law will play a part in not making mandatory rests a priority. (Axios)
- A mosquito located off Loop 410 and Ray Ellison Boulevard tested positive for the West Nile virus. This discovery has prompted city officials to prevent being bitten by dressing with clothes that covers legs and arms, applying mosquito repellent, stay indoors when mosquitoes are mostly active around dawn and dusk, and to keep a clean environment with no standing water and disposal of unused items that remains outdoors. (KSAT San Antonio)
- Safe Haven baby boxes could be coming to San Antonio by 2024. "After Governor Greg Abbott signed a law expanding the Baby Moses Law, the City of San Antonio is already making plans to outfit the city with the potentially life-saving boxes." The estimated cost would be $250,000 for a total of 10 to 12 boxes. (mySA)

From my notebook:
- Fires pushing firefighters to the test: "A recent trend of fires breaking out in vacant buildings across the city is both troubling San Antonio firefighters and putting them to the test. Since the beginning of April, KSAT 12 News has covered at least ten fires in vacant homes and other buildings." (KSAT San Antonio)
- Will it cool down for July 4th? "It appears that the humidity and high heat index readings are taking a minor break ahead of a possible rainy Fourth of July holiday." (mySA)
- 1,000 pounds of quartz crushed a worker update: "A 45-year-old man died Wednesday morning, June 28, after he was crushed by several sheets of quartz used for making countertops." (mySA)
