📰 News we're reading

1. Is San Antonio's Pearl ice rink a 'holiday fail'? Not quite (mysanantonio.com) — San Antonio residents can now try open-air ice skating at the Pearl, where operators are battling the city’s heat with a powerful chiller and carefully maintained ice. Despite some shallow puddles and social media gripes, project managers say the rink remains solid, safe, and open daily through January 4, with admission starting at $20 including skate rentals.

2. Neighbors upset with speeding, lack of crosswalks at West Side intersection (ksat.com) — Neighbors near St. Mary’s University on San Antonio’s West Side say speeding and a lack of crosswalks at Cincinnati Avenue and Stonegate Drive make the intersection dangerous for drivers and pedestrians. Residents are calling for speed bumps and better controls, while District 7 Councilmember Marina Alderete Gavito urges them to report concerns through 311 so the city can prioritize fixes.

3. Family fears missing 14-year-old girl may be in danger, urges public for help (kens5.com) — San Antonio-area authorities and a local family are urgently asking for help finding 14-year-old Svetlana Ortega, missing since Dec. 7 from her east Bexar County home. Her mother fears possible online grooming and trafficking, and a local search group warns such recruitment tactics are common. Anyone with information is urged to contact SAPD’s Missing Persons Unit.

4. The power player behind San Antonio's celebrities (mysanantonio.com) — San Antonio readers meet Jordan “Lil Jay” Zapata, a West Side native who’s become a behind-the-scenes force bringing major entertainers and celebrity events to the city. From teen ticket seller to industry connector and philanthropist, he now helps attract stars, boost local tourism, and support families through his Ram Heart Foundation, all while proudly keeping his base in San Antonio.

5. St. Paul Square bar hub in San Antonio shows hope after closures (mysanantonio.com) — San Antonio’s St. Paul Square bar hub Outpost Junction remains intact months after all four concepts abruptly closed, with signage and decor still in place at 1170 E. Commerce St. No leasing or construction activity is visible yet, but nearby growth suggests the prime nightlife spot is unlikely to stay dark for long.
