ACROSS AMERICA — The year is quickly coming to a close and we're looking back at some of the most newsworthy events of 2024.
The presidential election dominated headlines for much of the year, with two assassination attempts made on President-Elect Donald Trump, President Biden withdrew from the race, and Vice President Kamala Harris took his place. The results of the election also generated buzzworthy stories about former Florida representative Matt Gaetz, who stepped down from Trump's nomination for attorney general, billionaire Elon Musk, who was tapped to start the Department of Government Efficiency, and President Biden pardoning his son Hunter Biden after he pleaded guilty to federal tax charges.
In addition to the many election stories this year, the U.S. faced numerous natural disasters. From wildfires on both sides of the country to catastrophic hurricanes, many states were devastated by worsening weather conditions. However, the country also got to experience such rare phenomena as the northern lights and a total solar eclipse in the spring.

Not all of 2024 was bad news. The year was filled with many sports victories and record-breaking moments. Iowa Hawkeye's Women's Basketball player Caitlin Clark broke the record for the most career NCAA tournament points in both the men's and women's divisions. The Kansas City Chiefs celebrated their fourth Super Bowl win and Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift broke the internet while sharing a celebratory kiss.
