Recalled Broccoli Possibly Deadly, FDA Warns [Recall Roundup]

About half a million LG electric ranges have been recalled due to issues resulting in more than two dozen fires that caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages and killed three pets, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.

Also in recent recalls, the Food and Drug Administration has increased the threat level of recalled broccoli florets that may be in consumers’ freezers, saying that eating them could lead to deadly listeria infections.

Besides the CPSC and FDA, other sources for this roundup are the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and company websites.

Pets Can Activate LG Ranges, Start Fires

LG is recalling about 500,000 electric ranges because the knobs on the front can be easily turned on by children and pets, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The agency has received at least 86 reports from consumers who said the front knobs were unintentionally activated, starting at least 28 fires. Five of them caused extensive property damage exceeding $340,000. Three pets died in the fires, and at least eight people have received minor burns.

A full list of the recalledLG slide-in and freestanding ranges with front-mounted knobs is found on the CPSC website. Consumers should contact LG for a free warning label that reminds them to use the lock function on the range control panel so the heating elements can't be activated when range is not in use.

The stoves were sold at Best Buy, Costco, The Home Depot, Lowe’s, and other appliance stores nationwide and online at LG.com. Depending upon the model, the ranges were sold from 2015 through January 2025 for between $1,400 and $2,650.

Recalled Broccoli Possibly Deadly: FDA

Recalled broccoli sold late last year at Walmart stores in 20 states is now the subject of a health alert from the Food and Drug Administration, which said in a new statement reclassifying the recall risk level to Class I, the agency’s highest risk level assigned to potentially deadly illnesses.

The FDA announced the initial recall of Braga Fresh Marketside Broccoli Florets due to the possibility of listeria contamination on Dec. 31. The recall risk level was heightened in a notice published on Jan. 27.

The affected produce had a best-if-used-by date of Dec. 10, 2024, but may be in people’s freezers, the agency said. The UPC listed on the back of the bag is 6 81131 32884 5, and the lot code listed on the front of the bag is BFFG327A6.

The potential listeria contamination was discovered during a random test by Texas Health and Human Services. No illnesses have been reported, according to the FDA.

The broccoli was sold in Walmart stores in Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Pella Doors Violate Reese’s Law: CPSC

Pella Corp. is recalling sliding patio doors and windows that violate Reese’s Law, federal legislation passed in 2022 that toughens safety requirements for button cell and coin batteries, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The law requiring child-resistant packaging and clear warning labels on the products inside is named after Reese Hamsmith, an 18-month-old toddler from Lubbock, Texas, who died two months after swallowing a button battery in 2020. Her symptoms mimicked thse of a respiratory illness, according to reports.

No injuries have been associated with the products, but consumers who have them should remove the battery from the sensors and remote control, then place them where children can’t reach them, according to the recall notice.

About 340 sliding patio doors and windows with automated shades were recalled. A complete list is found on the CPSC website. The products were sold by Pella direct, as well as Lowe’s and Builders FirstSource stores nationwide and online from March 2024 through June 2024.

Health Alert Issued For Wegmans Chicken Nuggets

The Food Safety and Inspection Service has issued a public health alert for certain Wegmans store-brand chicken nuggets because they may contain bone fragments.

The alert was issued for 46-oz. plastic packages containing Wegmans Family Pack Fully Cooked Breaded Chicken Breast with Rib Meat.

This item was produced solely for Wegmans Food Markets and distributed to retail locations in Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

The product, which has a best-if-used-by date of Aug. 26. 2025, should not be consumed. A recall was not requested because the product is no longer available for purchase, food inspectors said.

Toyota, Lexus And Ford Vehicles Recalled

Toyota is recalling more than 140,000 vehicles, including some from its Lexus brand, the company said in a pair of news releases Thursday.

Toyota is recalling certain models its Tacoma 4-wheel drive vehicles because they could have damaged rear brake hoses if there is “enough build-up of mud and dirt inside the rear wheels,” the company said.

Also recalled are certain Toyota Camry and Lexus RX vehicles that may have second-row center seatbelts that were damaged during manufacturing.

Ford Motor Company has recalled nearly 73,000 vehicles because of potential problems with the rearview camera may fluctuate between a blank screen or a distorted image, according to a recall report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Ford and safety regulators are investigating the cause of the malfunction. Some of the vehicles included in the recall include 2021–2022 Expedition full-sized SUVs and Super Duty, F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, F-600 pickups.

Ford also issued a safety recall for certain model years of its Bronco Sport compact SUV and Maverick pickup truck due to electrical issues that could lead to the loss of power. More than 270,000 vehicles are potentially affected, according to a letter to Ford from the NHTSA.
