Being a good neighbor is something we should aim to do every day — but today is the day to celebrate what it actually means. Good Neighbor Day is an annual holiday that encourages and inspires people to be kind to each other and go the extra mile for their neighbors.

This year, we recognize the good neighbors across the country who look out for one another and lend a helping hand. Here are three real-life stories of people whose good deeds made a positive impact on their communities.

When Sammi And Clint Noticed Their Apartment Building Was On Fire, They Wasted No Time Getting Neighbors To Safety

Mesa, Arizona residents Sammi and Clint were taking their dog outside when they noticed that an apartment in their complex was on fire. Realizing that their neighbor Jessica and her family were still inside their unit, the pair acted quickly to ensure everyone got out safely.

“I gave the leash to my husband, then broke the glass on the extinguisher. He then alerted Jessica as I ran to the apartment that was on fire,” explains Sammi. “Once I realized that there was no one inside and it was too big and hot to go more than four steps inside, I dropped the extinguisher and started alerting neighbors. I grabbed two of Jessica's kids as she grabbed two and her husband grabbed pets.”

Thankfully, everyone was able to get out of the complex safely. In addition to helping get Jessica’s whole family out of the apartment, Sammi “knocked on six or eight more doors and helped get two more pets out of the building. My husband was helping to get people away from the building to the back wall of our parking lot.”

The hectic scene, along with Sammi’s heroic actions, can be seen on a video recorded by the neighbors’ Ring Video Doorbells with Ring Protect subscriptions. “When I replayed it later on once things calmed down, I was hysterical,” explains Jessica. “I was very grateful to have such amazing neighbors that watch over us.”

But for Sammi and Clint, coming to their neighbors' rescue wasn’t even a question. “It’s just what you do when such a situation happens. I am just so thankful everyone is safe,” explains Sammi. “I watched all the Ring [videos] after from both mine and Jessica’s [doorbells] and was just in shock at how everything happened.”

When it comes to her Ring devices, Jessica is thankful they can monitor any and all motion inside and outside her home. “I never have to worry about who is around,” she says. “I have multiple Ring cameras within my home, as well as my Ring Alarm.”

Sammi agrees and says, “I will not have a home without [a Ring camera] again! I leave for my job at all hours of the early morning, and I feel so safe coming and going. I can see my pet while I am away and calm her down. I am able to check my vehicles when I am gone overnight. I know my place is safe.”

John And His Daughter Leave Heartwarming Letter Of Gratitude For Postal Employee Jannette

When John, a Trumbull, Connecticut, resident, received an Amazon package that was quite heavy, he could imagine the effort it took U.S. Postal Service worker Jannette to carry the package all the way up the driveway to his doorstep.

Feeling touched by Jannette’s hard work and dedication, John and his daughter discussed what they could do to express their gratitude. “We decided to write a ‘thank you’ appreciating all she does,” explains John.

Although it was a simple act of kindness, the thoughtful gesture touched Janette in a deep way.
John has a Ring Video Doorbell with a Ring Protect subscription, and the family was able to watch Jannette’s emotional response when opening the heartfelt letter. The video showed her reading parts of the letter out loud, expressing her appreciation to the family and even tearing up at the end.

John considered the sweet exchange a “teachable moment” for both himself and his daughter. “It's always good to be kind to people. Just say thank you, no matter how small,” he says. “I'm so grateful to her for what she does.”

While John is thankful that his Ring Video Doorbell makes his home and family feel safer, he also appreciates that it helped save the memory of this special moment. “It just goes to show how Ring can bring happiness and light to all of us when you least expect it,” says John.

Former Marine Chris Picks Up Fallen Flag For Neighbor Amanda And Sparks A Friendship

Chris, a Glendale, Arizona, resident, was on his way to work when he noticed that his neighbor Amanda’s American flag was on the ground. As a former Marine, Chris felt it was his duty to pick up the flag and properly roll it up.

“I am very patriotic,” explains Chris. “The flag stands for more than just a country to me. It is a symbol of all those that came before me and the brothers and sisters that I served with and the sacrifices that they have made so we can have the freedoms that we have today.”

When Amanda returned home, she noticed the flag was at the front door and wondered how it got there. Fortunately, Amanda has a Ring Spotlight Cam Battery with a *Ring Protect subscription, and was able to rewatch the video showing her neighbor Chris — whom she hadn’t met yet — roll up the flag and place it at the front door.

Amanda, who has several family members in the service — including her husband, who is in the Air Force — also believes the flag holds great importance and appreciates her neighbor’s act of kindness. “It's doing something just because you're trying to be nice,” she explains. “Not because it benefits you in any way, but just because you know that your neighbor needs help.”

She’s also thankful that Ring saved the kind moment and helped lead her to the good Samaritan. She showed the video to her husband and he recognized Chris as the “the neighbor across the street.”

The couple ended up introducing themselves to Chris and bringing him a bottle of wine to show their appreciation. “If it wasn't for Ring [helping] to know who this was, I wouldn't have been able to become friends with my neighbors,” says Amanda. “We were really happy that they did that for us.”
