Showy Victorian architecture bore little resemblance to the square lines of houses that went before it. A century later, the style endures.

This modern Victorian home in Washington Township, New Jersey, built in 1995 has all the flourises of similarly-styled homes more than 100 years ago.

ACROSS AMERICA — Victorian architecture came to prominence in the early 1900s when developments in manufacturing made it possible to create turrets, scalloped shingles and scrolled brackets.

At the time, these “show off” houses bore little resemblance to the straight lines of the houses that came before. They joyful houses with asymmetrical floor plans were often painted in multiple colors, had bold upper-story by windows, fancy latticework and steep gabled roofs.

This week in How Much House, we look at three distinctly different Victorian homes in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island.
