Happy Veterans Day!

Happy Veterans Day!

(Jennifer Ditscheit )

Happy Veterans Day! This Veterans Day we are looking at Data-Z to learn more about the veterans in each state.

In 2019, California had over 10,980 homeless veterans but the state has seen a decrease over the last 10 years. There are 10,000 more homeless veterans in California than the 50-state average of 724. While California has seen a 6,000 person decrease since 2007, the state still has a long way to go to protect and provide for veterans. California has the largest population of homeless veterans and is the largest state. Seven states, however, have more than 1,000 homeless veterans, including Oregon, which is the 27th most populated state.

Each year the United States spends $1.3 trillion on Defense and Veterans affairs. The United States also has one of the world’s largest military. You could cut our military spending in half and it would still dwarf other countries’ spending.

2020 has brought many new questions. With the highest unemployment rate the country has ever seen, will the homeless veterans’ population increase? With a loss of tax revenue, will the federal government cut funding for veterans? We hope in 2020 that our veterans get better support from our government.

And from Truth in Accounting, thank you to all the men and women who have served our country.
