2021 Tokyo Olympics: Alternate Gymnast Tests Positive For Virus

The positive test is not expected to impact Simone Biles or any other member of the main U.S. gymnastics squad seeking a gold medal.

TOKYO — The first U.S. Olympic athlete to test positive for the coronavirus after arriving in Japan is an alternate on the women's gymnastics team, ESPN and others reported early on Monday.

Simone Biles, nor any of the other members of the U.S. delegation, are believed to be impacted by the positive test.

USA Gymnastics confirmed the positive test on the alternate squad but did not name the athlete. One other alternate will be required to quarantine after contact tracing was performed, a statement from USA Gymnastics says.

Leanne Wong, Kayla DiCello, Emma Malabuyo and Kara Eaker are the four alternate athletes on the U.S. gymnastics team. Biles, Jordan Chiles, Grace McCallum, Sunisa Lee, MyKayla Skinner and Jade Carey are the U.S. delegation for that team.

One other alternate gymnast will be quarantined after contact tracing was performed following the positive test.

"After reviewing the implemented COVID protocols with members of the delegation, the local government determined that the affected replacement athlete and one other replacement athlete would be subject to additional quarantine restrictions," USA Gymnastics said in a statement shared by ESPN.

The alternates are rooming and training together, according to ESPN. They have been traveling and training together with the main squad, but use a separate apparatus.

The alternate gymnast is the first American athlete to test positive after making the trip to Japan. Cori "Coco" Gauff, an American tennis player who was set to compete in Tokyo, didn't make the trip after testing positive for the virus in the United States.

Biles and the other Olympic athletes already in Japan will move to separate lodges and training facilities as a result of the gymnast's positive test, the USA Gymnastics statement added.
