450 Sickened: Latest On Salmonella Linked To Cucumbers
In a food alert Wednesday, the CDC said 449 people have been sickened, including 125 who have been hospitalized, in a multi-state salmonella outbreak linked to two cucumber growers in Florida.
The number of people sickened in the outbreak is up from 160 in June. No deaths have been reported. Reports of illnesses have been taken in 31 states and the District of Columbia.
The outbreak of Salmonella Africana and Salmonella Braenderup infections — originally reported as two separate outbreaks — was combined by the CDC and FDA because they shared several similarities, including “where and when illnesses occurred, the demographics of ill people and the foods they reported eating before they became sick,” the CDC said.
The two Florida growers linked to the outbreak likely don’t account for all the illnesses in the outbreak, first reported in May. The cucumbers were distributed nationwide. Patch has more.
Some DeWALT Mowers May Start On Their Own
Stanley Black & Decker is recalling about 46,200 DeWALT Battery Push walk-behind mowers because they can start without a key or fail to shut off if water gets into the mower’s handle support while the battery is installed.
The company said on the CPSC website it has taken 10 reports of mowers failing to shut off when the ball handle is released, and one report of the mower starting without a key inserted. In that incident, the user’s finger was cut, but the person didn’t need medical attention.
The recall is for 2024 model year DeWALT Battery 21” Push walk-behind mowers, model numbers DCMWP234U2 and DCMWP600X2, and DeWALT Battery 21” Self-Propelled walk-behind mowers, model numbers DCMWSP256U2 and DCMWSP650Y2. More details, including the manufacture date and factory code, are found on the CPSC website.
The affected were sold for between $530 and $750 at Home Depot, Tractor Supply, Ace Hardware and other retail outlets nationwide from January through July 2024. Some purchases were made online at the affected stores.
People who bought the mowers should immediately stop using the mowers if they have gotten wet and contact DeWALT for a free repair at an authorized service center. DeWALT’s toll-free line at 800-990-6421 is answered from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday. Or, they may go here or here for more information.
Gazebos A Hazard In High Winds
BJ’s Wholesale Club is recalling about 32,000 of its Berkley Jensen Gazebos because the cedar panels on the hard-top roof may not withstand high winds. The company said in a notice on the CPSC website that it has taken 137 reports of incidents in which the roof panels dislodged, including one causing minor injuries.
The gazebos, which cost between $1,300 and $1,800, were sold at BJ’s Wholesale stores nationwide and online between Oct. 20, 2020, and May 30, 2022.
BJ’s is contacting all known purchasers of model numbers A102008010, A102008100, A102011920, and A102011902 of the gazebos. Consumers who bought them should immediately stop using and stay away from them and request a free repair kit to secure the panels.

Uneviscerated Fish May Contain Botulism
North Fish USA Inc. of Hallandale, Florida, is recalling an undisclosed amount of imported 9-ounce packages of Cold Smoked Capelin because the uneviscerated fish exceed length limits, which increases the potential the fish may contain the bacteria that causes life-threatening botulism.
The recalled product was distributed to wholesale companies New York and Georgia and further distributed to retail stores along the East Coast, according to an announcement on the FDA website. The product comes in a 9-ounce, plastic package marked with UPC code 4811527003360, and with best-before dates of July 13, 2024, and Jan.07.13.2024.
Even if the product doesn’t look or smell bad, don’t eat it, the FDA warned.
Uneviscerated fish cannot exceed 5 inches in length under federal guidelines because the Clostridium botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish, the agency said.
No illnesses have been reported. Botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.
Customers can receive a full refund by returning the fish to the place of purchase. Questions may be directed to the company at 954-251-2021, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern.
Trader Joe’s Candles Pose Fire Hazard
Trader Joe’s is recalling about 653,000 Mango-Tangerine Scented Candles because the flame can spread from the wick to the wax, causing a larger-than-expected flame that can start a fire, according to the recall notice on the CPSC website.
Trader Joe’s said it has taken 14 reports of high flames, including three reports of minor property damage and two reports of minor burns.
The 5.7-ounce candles have white-colored wax and a cotton wick, and were sold in a tin container with the SKU number 56879 on the bottom.
People who bought the candles, sold in June 2024, should stop using them and return them to any Trader Joe’s store for a full cash refund of $4, or complete a product feedback form online to receive a $4 gift certificate by mail.
Coffee Makers Sold At Aldi Pose Burn Hazard
Aldi is recalling about 28,000 Ambiano Single-Serve Coffee Makers because they can expel hot water from the top and burn users. The coffee makers were sold. Aldi said on the CPSC website it has taken 25 reports from customers who reported the defect, including three who were burned.
The products were sold for about $50 at Aldi stores in 38 states and the District of Columbia between July and September 2023. Customers who bought the coffee makers, which came in gray, blue, pink and purple colors, should immediately stop using them.
They can get a full refund by returning the coffee makers to any Aldi store, or a $75 Aldi gift certificate if they register the recalled coffee maker online. Those customers will receive instructions on how to destroy the product and provide proof of purchase.
More details, including affected UPC codes, are found on the CPSC website.
