KENOSHA, WI — As jury deliberations in the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse entered the third day, tensions escalated between supporters and protesters camped outside the Kenosha County Courthouse.

Tempers flared and at least one protester was taken into custody during a demonstration Thursday, according to a report by The Associated Press. Meanwhile, the fate of 18-year-old Rittenhouse remains in the hands of a 12-person jury.

Rittenhouse is charged with first-degree reckless homicide, first-degree intentional homicide, attempted first-degree intentional homicide and two counts of reckless endangerment. If jurors can't decide on the first-degree intentional homicide and attempted first-degree intentional homicide counts, they can consider lesser counts.

If he is found guilty of the most serious charge, Rittenhouse could face life in prison.

If the jury reaches a guilty verdict, the judge will consider a defense request to declare a mistrial. If the jury finds Rittenhouse not guilty, the mistrial request will be nonconsequential.
