Watch Live Replay: St. Patrick's Day Festivities Coast To Coast

From the Irish sister-city of Dublin on California's East Bay to the grand-daddy of all parades along the eastern fringes of New York City's Central Park, Americans from coast to coast cloaked themselves in green for the nation's nod to everything St. Patrick's Day.

That "everything" has evolved over the years from a simple parade first held in Boston in 1737 to boisterous pub crawls, raucous music festivals and, in Chicago, to the magical annual transformation of an entire river into a shimmering waterway of Irish green.

March 17, historically speaking, marks the anniversary of the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who converted the Emerald Isle to Christianity in the 5th century. Modern-day March 17, though, mostly succeeds in reenforcing the stereotype of the hard-drinking, carefree, party-loving Irishman, with St. Patrick's Day now holding the distinction of being the second-drunkest holiday in the United States, outdone only by New Year's Eve.
