The University Of Utah: Huntsman Cancer Institute Cyclotron Project Construction Impacts

Huntsman Cancer Institute’s (HCI) cyclotron facility is the first and only in the state of Utah and also supports the surrounding region.  The facility manufactures radioactive drugs in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging to provide critical cancer diagnosis, progression, treatment, and research.  The existing facility has been operating at capacity and is nearing its end of service life. The facility is being moved to a new location, upgraded with the latest state-of-the-art equipment and infrastructure.  This high-priority project ensures continuous operation critical for HCI cancer care and research.

The construction site is next to Huntsman Cancer Research South, and the project begins this month with excavation for stormwater drains across Medical Drive North.  Road closures have been planned to minimize impact to the area, and pedestrian and vehicular traffic will be diverted with alternate routing.  The buildout will continue through 2022, with a planned move-in and occupancy date of April 2023.

The cyclotron facility is essential to HCI’s ongoing leading-edge cancer research and patient care, and your understanding during construction is appreciated.
