Burlington is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Burlington has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Burlington was the first city in the United States to run entirely on renewable energy. In 2015, this green city achieved a milestone by sourcing its electricity from wind, water and biomass.
  • The University of Vermont (UVM), based in Burlington, is one of the oldest universities in the country. Founded in 1791, UVM’s campus is a mix of historic and modern buildings set against a backdrop of natural beauty.
  • Burlington is the birthplace of the iconic ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's. Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield opened their first scoop shop in a renovated gas station in Burlington in 1978.
  • The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts is a cultural cornerstone of Burlington. Housed in a beautifully restored 1930s art deco theater, the Flynn Center is the go-to venue for an array of performances, from Broadway shows to live music to local theater productions.
  • Burlington's Church Street Marketplace is a pedestrian-only thoroughfare that buzzes with life. Lined with shops, restaurants and street performers, this open-air mall is the heart of the city’s downtown.
