Vermont wildlife officials warn ice may not be safe despite cold temperatures (wcax.com) — Burlington-based wildlife officials are warning residents that, despite the recent cold, ice on Vermont’s lakes may still be dangerously thin and uneven. They urge anyone heading out to test thickness frequently, look for at least three to four inches of clear ice, and carry safety gear like ice picks and a rope to avoid tragedy.
   

2. Vermont family says nephew is ok following mass shooting at Brown University (mynbc5.com) — A Vermont family with ties to Burlington says their nephew, Brown University student Hisham Awartani, is safe after a deadly campus shooting that killed two and injured nine. Awartani was previously paralyzed in a 2023 Thanksgiving shooting while visiting Burlington, and the new incident has prompted colleges including UVM and VTSU to review safety and alert systems.
   

3. Addison County State's Attorney pleads no contest to DUI (mychamplainvalley.com) — Burlington readers should know that Addison County State’s Attorney Eva Vekos has pleaded no contest to a DUI charge stemming from a 2024 incident and received a deferred six‑month probationary sentence. She’ll report to a Chittenden County probation officer and must follow strict conditions around alcohol use, despite objections from the Vermont Attorney General’s Office.
   

4. How Vermont Green FC turned a whole state into a fanbase (fansided.com) — Burlington’s own Vermont Green FC has turned Virtue Field and the surrounding neighborhood into a packed summer destination, capping an undefeated season with a USL2 championship. The club’s mix of high-level soccer, social and environmental missions, and plans for a new women’s team is drawing thousands from across Vermont into a growing Burlington-centered fan culture.
