📰 News we're reading

• Jewish community in Burlington celebrate first night of Hanukkah (wcax.com) — Burlington residents gathered on the UVM Green to light the first Hanukkah candle, share hot cider, and hear from local rabbis and Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak. Despite news of a deadly attack on Hanukkah celebrants in Australia, organizers say the strong local turnout showed people’s determination to celebrate openly and support one another.

• Ever-rising taxes endanger downtown restaurants, owner warns (vermontdailychronicle.com) — Downtown Burlington’s Black Cap Coffee & Bakery is closing after citing an extremely difficult economic climate and persistent drug problems, adding to concerns about the city’s business environment. A Barre restaurant owner is now warning that rising property taxes and higher operating costs could push more small eateries across Vermont to the brink.
